Micro-Finance meets Macro-Empowerment
Financial independence is the cornerstone of social empowerment. In our work across rural Maharashtra, we have witnessed the profound social shift that occurs when women gain control over their finances. The Self-Help Group (SHG) model is not just about micro-lending; it is about building collective resilience.
The Ripple Effect of Women's Income
When a woman in a rural setting earns a supplementary income, the first beneficiaries are her children. Nutrition improves, school attendance stabilizes, and household health metrics rise. Furthermore, women in SHGs report a significant decrease in domestic disputes and an increase in their decision-making power within the family.
Case Study: The Artisans of Block A
Last year, an SHG we seeded with initial training in garment making secured a contract with a regional retailer. Today, these 15 women generate a combined revenue that exceeds the agricultural income of their husbands. This is the structural change we aim to replicate.
